The Quest field guide · 4 practical steps

STEP 01

Make lighting easy to find

Keep working flashlights and spare batteries in familiar locations. Let everyone practice finding and switching them on.

STEP 02

Plan for essential needs

Identify equipment and medication storage that depends on electricity. Discuss backup arrangements with the appropriate provider before an outage.

STEP 03

Keep a way to stay informed

Charge phones and power banks when severe weather is expected. Know your utility’s outage reporting options and keep a battery-powered radio available.

STEP 04

Use fuel-powered equipment safely

Generators belong outdoors, at least 20 feet from doors, windows, and vents. Never run them in a house or garage. Use functioning battery-powered or battery-backup carbon monoxide alarms. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions.
